2025 Drukyul’s Literature and Arts Festival returns to the Royal University of Bhutan in Thimphu from August 2-4, 2025.

This year’s theme, “The Great Fourth’s Wisdom of Balance: Harmonizing Heritage, Nature, and the Human Spirit,” honors the visionary leadership and profound wisdom of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck on his 70th Birth Anniversary.

Celebrating three decades of his mindful legacy, the festival explores how the enduring values of cultural heritage, environmental stewardship, and human resilience can inspire sustainable creativity and harmony in today’s interconnected world.

Timeline and History

2010

Her Majesty the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Gyalyum Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck co-founded Bhutan’s first literature festival ‘Mountain Echoes’ as a Bhutan- India initiative with His Excellency Pavan Varma, author Namita Gokhale, literary consultant Mita Kapur and Pramod Kumar KG.

2010-2020

Mountain Echoes has been committed to promoting literature, art and culture in Bhutan.

2020

The festival began a new chapter when His Majesty renamed it “Drukyul’s Literature and Arts Festival”. Although the festival was deferred for the last two years due to COVID, the Drukyul's Literature & Art Festival launched Bhutan Echoes, a year-round initiative to nurture literary culture in Bhutan.

2022

DLF2022 marked the inaugural festival led by an all- Bhutanese team, featuring a hybrid format of online and in-person events.

DLF2023 was a profoundly meaningful in-person reunion after four years. Engaging discussions covered diverse topics, from the power of language, post-pandemic human connections, fashion, environmental concerns, and digital technology.
