Based in Mumbai, Kiran Rao is a director, producer, and writer. She began her career as an assistant director on Lagaan (2001) and Monsoon Wedding (2001). Her directorial debut, Dhobi Ghat (2010), premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, establishing her distinct voice. Her second film, Laapataa Ladies (2023), also premiered at Toronto and was India’s official entry to the 97th Academy Awards. As a producer, her credits include Dangal (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017). Kiran co-founded the Paani Foundation, a non-profit supporting sustainable agriculture and drought prevention in Maharashtra.m
