R. Michael Feener is Professor of Cross-regional Studies at Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies and Associate Member of the History Faculty at the University of Oxford. He also serves as Director of the Maritime Asia Heritage Survey (MAHS), which digitally documents endangered cultural heritage in remote areas of the Maldives, Indonesia, and Thailand. Formerly the Sultan of Oman Fellow at Oxford, he has held academic positions at NUS, Harvard, and EHESS, among others. Feener’s interdisciplinary work spans Islamic history, law, and heritage preservation, with a focus on Southeast Asia. He is also a Senior Associate at Melbourne Law School.
